Winter commuting: Which studded winter tires?

10 Comments 16 November 2010

Since I managed to mangle my wheels yesteday, I’ll have to take them to be trued and while I’m at it, I’m going to put studded tires on them. We all rode bikes to school and everywhere when we were kids, even during the winter and it was awesome. Sliding and throwing your tail as […]

City commuting: Stockholm vs. Helsinki

7 Comments 14 November 2010

We recognize that Coming Thru is not a political blog or talking too much about city planning or traffic management, but it does affect us. I’ve mentioned earlier that there is a very active group of people here in Finland, who are working hard in order to improve the conditions for all Finns. Luckily, the […]

Bike commuters in London – a view from the outside

No Comments 06 November 2010

We arrived in London on Wednesday the 3rd of November, still having a few hours of travel ahead of us and the first thing we hear is the constant yells of “there’s a tube strike today, the underground is not running at all”. Which means our plans were foiled a bit, but luckily London is […]

November brings five months of riding

No Comments 01 November 2010

November is here and the land is preparing for hibernation here in Finland. October and November have always been annoying months for cycling because of freezing temperatures during the night and wet leaves during the day make cycling similar to working in a vaseline factory. The last two months of riding have been quite broken […]

Commuting: Screw the shoulder, back on the road

1 Comment 20 October 2010

This should be another rest week for me and the shoulder, but during last weekend in Hanko we had the opportunity to go riding and naturally we had to take it. Since I survived single tracks and several hours of forests, I thought I could muster the energy to ride to work as well. The […]

Cyclocross, freezing cold and away we go!

6 Comments 14 October 2010

It’s been darn cold here the last few days, this morning the temperature had actually gone below zero and that naturally means that the next time I go riding, I’ll have to have studded wheels. As you might remember, last Sunday on the 10/10/10 the Finnish championships of cyclocross were being competed in and Jukka […]

Archives: Ups and downs

No Comments 04 October 2010

When I wrote my first post, I had already been cycling for a few weeks. Well, I had been at least trying hard, but it seemed like the gods of cycling were seriously trying to keep me away from the saddle. When I took my first proper fall in years, I had to spend a […]

Commuting: A single day of wins and losses

No Comments 29 September 2010

Today was an interesting day of commuting. It started yesterday, when I got fed up with feeling too much effort from my cycling, and I decided to lift my saddle even more. 10mm higher, yet again and you wouldn’t believe the difference. It was like gliding on clouds. This was naturally also due to having […]

Commuting: What to wear?

5 Comments 22 September 2010

I’m a bit torn at the moment as there are two riders with two different needs in me. If I just would commute directly from home to work and back, there wouldn’t be an issue. I could wear whatever spandex loving dream I would want to and be done with it very quickly. However, I […]

Not Commuting: Being sick sucks

1 Comment 21 September 2010

In the end of last week I started to feel more tired than usual and after our company’s autumn kick-off that went a bit longer than expected and I had even more fun than anticipated obviously resulted my stress hormones relaxing and giving in to the flu that my wife has had since last week. […]

About Comingthru

Coming Thru (or Coming Through - as that URL was taken) is a daily updated bike magazine - a collection of writings and links that relate to biking in its every form. The idea started from when Maarten met Markus decided to finally start collecting the things we like about bikes and talk about our everyday adventures in dodging moving objects at high speeds. The site is run by a collage of cyclists, most notably by Canadian Johanna MacDonald, Belgian Maarten Patteeuw and Finnish Markus Sandelin.

It all started in the spring of 2010, after a record breaking snowy winter when Markus bought a house 25 kilometers from the office and decided to handle the commuting with a bicycle. It turned out the bike wasn’t up to standards for that kind of stress and the first weeks were more tragicomic than glorious. Thus the idea began to brew to actually document this journey.
