Our biker lives

Route: The landing zone tour

0 Comments 06 July 2010

Since we bike mostly here in Finland, we have a few routes for sharing. As I got my bike back from maintenance yesterday, I wanted to take it out for a spin and a decided try one of the routes I’d planned with Bikemap.net. I synced the route to my Garmin Forerunner 305 (no, I don’t want to spend €500 on an Edge 705) and was off. I’d never biked there before, so having a GPS telling me where to go was very necessary. I rarely get lost with a car, but on a bike I manage to do that quite efficiently.

The route goes up and down in the first 10 kilometers, is quite smooth and flat for the next 25 and then back to “hills” in the last ten. The cool thing about this route is that it goes by our country’s main airport and even cooler, there are plenty of departing and landing planes which thunder over your head, looking and sounding awesome. It’s something akin to what a rabbit might feel seeing the shadow of a hawk above, since seeing a massive shadow glide on the ground touches some evolutionary fear reaction of a mega condor or something like that.

About Comingthru

Coming Thru (or Coming Through - as that URL was taken) is a daily updated bike magazine - a collection of writings and links that relate to biking in its every form. The idea started from when Maarten met Markus decided to finally start collecting the things we like about bikes and talk about our everyday adventures in dodging moving objects at high speeds. The site is run by a collage of cyclists, most notably by Canadian Johanna MacDonald, Belgian Maarten Patteeuw and Finnish Markus Sandelin.

It all started in the spring of 2010, after a record breaking snowy winter when Markus bought a house 25 kilometers from the office and decided to handle the commuting with a bicycle. It turned out the bike wasn’t up to standards for that kind of stress and the first weeks were more tragicomic than glorious. Thus the idea began to brew to actually document this journey.
