Commuting 50 kilometers a day

The raison d’être of Coming thru is the fact that three months ago I started bike commuting around 50 kilometers to work. The first weeks didn’t quite work out. The photo is of me, holding my left crank in front of a bike store in Helsinki 20 minutes before it opened. It had been already changed twice as the original Shimano Deore crank had faulty manufacturing and naturally they didn’t have a proper replacement in hand.

The next one broke 15 kilometers later.

The issue? The shop hadn’t tightened up the crank properly. THREE TIMES they failed. Since I didn’t have the tool to do tightening, I had to trust the store owners that everything was proper. Never going back there.

I’ll be documenting my trip and experiences on my daily commute which should last from about 9 months yearly which I’m sure will include lots of learning and pain on the way. Also my goal is to learn proper bike maintenance and we might do a series of posts on basic bike maintenance and of course, we both like new gear with Maarten (he gets packages weekly to the office) and I’m sure we’ll say a few words on those as well.
